Get Away From It All And Escape To Lorne Australia on the Great Ocean Road

140 kilometers from Melbourne lies Lorne, a small coastal city. It is located in Victoria, Australia and is found on the Great Ocean Road. The mild weather adds to its appeal a tourist site.

The city has a broad range of accommodation options. There are high quality resorts for the luxury-seeking traveler. These include the Mantra Erskine Beach Resort, which is right on the beach, and the Cumberland Lorne Resort that is complete with a day spa. The Grand Pacific Hotel provides its guests with gorgeous ocean views and the beauty of a restored historical property.

For those seeking a smaller place to stay, there are motels, villas, and bed and breakfasts. Cottages can provide personal access to a home-like residence. The Lemonade Creek Cottages are surrounded by temperate rain-forest, combining the coziness of a cottage with the beauty of local flora. Some locations are mere minutes from beaches and shopping centers. There is even pet-friendly accommodation at places like Red Paws of Lorne.

The Great Ocean Road connects this city to the others in the area. It goes from Torquay to Warrnambool, and serves a double purpose. It provides a transportation route and serves as a war memorial to World War I casualties.

The residential population is just under 1000, and is generally a quiet place. It makes an excellent escape from the large cities. The nature-oriented attractions add interest to a quiet stay. Picnic in many of the beautiful local parks, or take a short trip to the Erskine Falls or Otways National Park.

Lorne is reminiscent of many seaside towns, though that should never dissuade interested tourists. There are art galleries and shopping. Check out the spa for a relaxing escape from the stress of life or of vacationing. Cafes and beaches are popular. If a tourist is staying anywhere with a kitchen, they will find excellent fish in the fish market, locally caught.

The town is involved in many different physical competitions. The Great Ocean Road Marathon, a 45 kilometer running race, uses Lorne as one endpoint. It began in 2005 and has continued ever since. There is also the Pier to Pub Swim and the Mountain to Surf Run. Surfing is a good sport for the area, but lessons may take you a couple hours from the city. Golf and other sports are available at the country club.

Once a year, the town is filled with concert goers. It is the center of the Falls Festival, a large music festival that spans four days. Starting on the 28th, and ending on New Years Day, the festival has hosted over fifty artists a year since 2007. It started in 1993, and each year it gets a little bigger. The attendees camp out, sometimes near the venue and sometimes a little ways outside of it. Tickets cost between $30 and $300, depending on if you have a pass for the whole festival or only some days, and whether or not you are camping.

This city offers many historic building worth the time to explore. They only date back to the late 1800s, but still hold a lot of history. The Pacific Hotel at Mountjoy Parade, built in 1879, sports wonderful old brick. There is also the Erskine House and St. Cuthbert Presbyterian Church. Those both date back to the early 19th century. Erskine House is particularly nice to visit, as it also has gardens and an accommodation center. Finally, there is also the Lorne Historical Society Museum to visit.
