High Poin, NC – A Great Place To Call Home
Now is a great time to buy a home in High Point, despite the challenging economy. As a High Point home owner, you can enjoy living in a nice city with southern charm and warm temperatures. Home prices vary, from a low of $30,00 to several million. The median price is $145,000. Single-family, new house construction building permits issued for 2009 totaled 174 buildings, with an average cost of $181,900.
The city has two municipal lakes, (City Lake and Oak Hollow Lake) which give you the option of living on beautiful lake front property.
The City Lake features a 540 acre lake with boating, fishing, paddle boats, picnic areas with shelters, canoe rentals, carousel, train, water-slide, largest outdoor swimming pool in the state, miniature golf, gymnasium, playground and excursion boat.
Oak Hollow Lake is a 1500 acre park with an 800 acre lake. Year round boating and fishing, sailing classes, sailboat rental, boat storage spaces, bank fishing, picnic shelter rental with electricity, restrooms, and grills are available at the Marina. You can also get bait, fishing supplies and snacks. There is a playground at the Marina and the North Overlook. Festival Park can be rented for private functions such as weddings, company picnics, concerts, and other events. The park includes one of the top ranked golf courses in the country, and an indoor tennis center.
There are 15 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, and 4 high schools. There are 6 private elementary schools and 2 private high schools. It is home to High Point University which was established in 1924. Guilford Technical Community College has a satellite campus located in the city.
The first furniture factory opened in 1879, and many more followed. Now, High Point is known as the “Furniture Capital of the World”, because of it’s furniture manufacturing, and twice a year International Home Furnishing Market that attracts over 100,000 exhibitors and buyers from all fifty states and 110 countries. It is also known as “North Carolina’s International City”. Bio-tech, Pharmaceutical, Distribution and Warehousing businesses came later, diversifying the business climate.
Major attractions include: Castle McCulloch Gold Mill built in 1832, the John Haley House, built in 1786, the world’s largest chest of drawers, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, High Point Community Theatre, and the High Point Museum and Historical Park.
The High Point Public Library contains almost 400,000 books, music recordings, videotapes, audio books, periodicals, and newspapers. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 15 miles from downtown.
